A Framework for Supporting Scientific Language in Primary Grades Sheryl L. Honig


The framework provided in this article for viewing students’ science writing offers teachers the opportunity to assess and support scientific language acquisition.
Language and thought are so closely related that it is almost impossible to consider one without the other (Vygotsky, 1934/1986). Like many students, I first learned how to classify trees when I was introduced to a network of named categories and distinctions. My access to knowledge about trees wound through language that included words like deciduous, coniferous, simple, compound, and petiole; this language functioned to compare categories and describe attributes of trees. My learning in this case was mediated by words; the language of biology de- termined how I organized my thinking about biology.

To engage in the socially constructed, theoreti- cal, scientific culture, I had to be taught specialized vocabulary to go with my hands-on experience of collecting and examining specimens. In turn, this vo- cabulary was couched in language that was general- ized and abstract, which is characteristic of academic scientific language. Fluency with this language—the ability to flexibly read and write it—was necessary for me to excel in academic science settings. Science is constructed by particular routines of language, and students access scientific ideas through language; after all, people in academic settings routinely use theoretical language to mediate scientific concepts. Thus, students’ success in the domain of science is necessarily linked to their fluency with this special- ized discourse (Gee, 2004; Lemke, 1990).

In this article, I present a framework for evaluat- ing the written scientific discourse of second- and third-grade students. Out of necessity, this framework consists of concepts that are mediated by terms and named categories that may be new to the reader. This introduction to the language of such a framework may influence the way you understand students’ at- tempts to write in science and the way you support them in that endeavor.

Fluency in the Domain-Specific Language of Science
When students come to school, they are already flu- ent in many discourses: the language of play, the lan- guage of family festivals, the language of eating, and so forth. In the classroom, students are confronted with new, academic discourses. Academic scientific discourse represents a distinct way of knowing and thinking (Gee 2004; Halliday & Martin, 1993; Lemke, 1990; Ogborn, Kress, Martins, & MacGillicuddy, 1996), and therefore a particular language for conveying ideas to others (Goldman & Bisanz, 2002; Halliday & Martin, 1993).
Specifically, research has shown that academic scientific texts express scientific ideas that are ca- nonical and theoretical in nature, referring to gen- eral classes of objects rather than particular ones, and these texts tend to emphasize relationships of classification and logical connections among gen- eral terms and processes (Lemke, 1990). Unlike nar- rative or everyday discourses, academic scientific discourse is characterized by elements such as topic presentations, descriptions of attributes, character- istic events, category comparisons, experimental

An Example
In language-rich classroom com- munities in which teachers integrate reading and writing with hands-on
science activities, students readily take up the scien- tific discourse in which they are immersed. In one case (Honig 2007, in press), two teachers and their respective multiage (grades 2 and 3) classes cocon- structed a scientific discourse that functioned to communicate data-level ideas (referring to concrete objects at hand) as well as theoretical ideas (refer- ring to general principles and general classes of ob- jects). Students and teachers communicated such ideas through linguistic elements such as descrip- tion of attributes, characteristic events, results, and explanation. Students were immersed in a classroom context that included extensive dialogue around hands-on activities, reading of informational science trade books, and various writing activities.

In this literacy-rich context, students participated in various forms of scientific writing: They quickly jotted notes following a hands-on activity; they wrote sticky note summaries of main ideas following small-group reading of an informational book; they coconstructed class charts summarizing scientific concepts; they filled out experiment sheets (scientif- ic method sheets) documenting hypotheses, results, and conclusions of a hands-on activity; they drew concept maps; they constructed graphic organizers; they individually wrote end-of-unit books; and they collaborated with peers to produce end-of-unit re- search reports.
Scientific writing was highly scaffolded in this con- text by the teachers. Teachers’ directions, modeling, and comments during discussion included explicit examples of what to write about (“You have to an- swer the question.”), what words to use (“You would probably want to say ‘I think....’”), how to consider the audience (“You don’t want the reader to think this is boring.”), and why to write (“So that you will remem- ber.”). In most cases, writing activities were preceded

Although scientific discourse may be new and challenging to some students, it is not the case that young students are unable to learn informational discourses, nor is it the case that they find such dis- course to be off-putting. Research shows that young students respond to and take up informational dis- courses quite readily when socially supported in those discourses (Pappas, 1993); however, many students do not come to school with this fluency. Further, the intense focus on decoding in primary curricula has relegated instruction in informational literacies to a marginal role in classroom schedules.
Fluency in a specialized language such as sci- entific discourse involves receptive knowledge and expressive knowledge of linguistic patterns and words. Receptive knowledge refers to students’ ability to understand, to some extent, the word when they hear or read it. Expressive knowledge refers to the students’ ability to use the term in speech or writing to communicate scientific ideas. Often in classroom instruction, receptive knowledge receives more in- structional focus than does expressive knowledge. For one thing, there is more focus on reading and comprehending than on talking and writing. In addi- tion, it is a more complex endeavor to measure (test) expressive knowledge than receptive knowledge. Typically assessment of language is limited to mea- suring students’ ability to define vocabulary terms or to select a correct definition from four distracters, and such assessment does not directly address students’ ability to use particular vocabulary to communicate ideas. The focus of this article is on the measurement and support of students’ expressive fluency with sci- entific discourse, their ability to use the specialized

by sessions of group sharing in which class charts of writing ideas were coconstructed by teacher and stu- dents. Students were intentionally immersed in multi- modal aspects of the language of science.
Students in these classrooms participated in a hands-on demonstration in which they created a vortex by spinning tea leaves in a vase of water. This demonstration was intended to serve as a metaphor that could explain the constant storm, or the Great Red Spot, on Jupiter’s surface. Classroom discussion included data-level discourse about the spinning tea leaves as well as theoretical discourse about the connection to the theoretical spinning particles on Jupiter’s surface. Following the discussion, stu- dents were asked to write and illustrate what they had learned about Jupiter’s constant storm. Students worked alone and finished in about 20 minutes.
In the next section I provide examples of stu- dents’ artifacts. I begin by discussing the kinds of ideas the students expressed. Using Pappas’s (2006) framework of global elements for expository text, I found evidence of several types of ideas that students expressed in their writing.


In addition to the ideas expressed by students, I also describe the linguistic (i.e., tense, general versus particular nouns) and lexical (i.e., use of specialized vocabulary) nature of their work. As stated previous- ly, scientific language is domain-specific; therefore, to assess and support students’ acquisition of this language, a framework is needed that authentically reflects its domain-specific nature.

Examples of Students’ Texts: Types of Ideas, Grammar, and Vocabulary In this section, I provide five examples from the texts of 36 students, and I discuss them according to a

Grammatical and Lexical Nature of Results. Six students wrote about the results of the hands-on tea-leaf activity by using data-level scientific dis- course, characterized by past tense verbs (e.g., when we spun), particular nouns (e.g., the tea flakes), and some specialized vocabulary (e.g., vortex) to de- scribe the actual science event in which they par- ticipated. Here is an example of what one student wrote:

When we spun the tea flakes and water it caused a vor- tex and it looked like a tornado.
Grammatical and Lexical Nature of Description of Attributes. Eleven students wrote description of attributes by using present or timeless tense (e.g., it is a), nouns that refer to decontextualized or theoretical entities (e.g., constant storm), and some specialized vocabulary (e.g., vortex) to describe the attributes of Jupiter, a theoretical entity. Here is an example of a written description of attributes:
I learned about the red spot on Jupiter. It is a constant storm. The gas swirls around and makes a vortex.

specialized vocabulary to describe what theoreti- cally happens on Jupiter. In addition, these students typically used phrases such as this is just like or this represents to describe the link between the hands-on activity and theoretical Jupiter. Here is an example of written results linked to characteristic events:
When we twirled the pencil in the water and tea leaves it started to make a tornado which is a vortex. The vor- tex sucked the tea leaves. The swirling gases is what makes the storm on Jupiter.


Grammatical and Lexical Nature of Explanation.
Five students wrote explanations by using timeless tense verbs, nouns that represent abstract entities, and some specialized vocabulary to explain a theo- retical idea. Students typically used conjunctions such as because to construct explanations of cause and effect relationships. Here are two examples of a written explanation:
On Jupiter the gases caused a swirling vortex and sucked up particles causing a constant storm.
Do you want to know what that red spot is on Jupiter? Well I’ll tell you. The red spot is a constant storm. The constant storm has never stopped since a man from earth saw it. “I don’t know why it hasn’t gone away so please don’t ask me.” I saw how the storm forms with this awesome activity. The storm forms because all of the dust connects because of the gas swirling to make a vortex.


Grammatical and Lexical Nature of Explanation Linked to Further Question. One student wrote an explanation linked to a further question by using timeless tense, general nouns, and some specialized vocabulary to explain and wonder about a theoreti- cal idea. Here is an example of a written explanation linked to a further question:
Today in science we did an experiment to see what is happening on Jupiter’s red spot. We found out that the red spot is actually a vortex that I’m wondering if it re- ally does black hole things like suck things into it, bend light, and minimize things that go into it.
A Closer Look at Grade, Ideas Expressed, and Vocabulary Usage
In summary, the students writing about Jupiter’s Great Red Spot functioned to express four distinct types of meanings, or ideas—(1) results, (2) description of at- tributes of Jupiter, (3) results linked to characteristic
events on Jupiter, and (4) explanation of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. The teachers’ goal was for students to understand the constant storm on Jupiter and “how it works,” so they rated students’ artifacts in a way that favored links between the classroom activity and the constant storm or explanations of the constant storm. Therefore, the ideas represented in students artifacts were graded according to this order, from lowest to highest: (1) results (in which students wrote about what happened to the tea-leaf vortex), (2) de- scription of attributes of Jupiter (in which students reported that there is a vortex on Jupiter’s surface), (3) results and characteristic events of the storm on Jupiter (in which students wrote about the tea-leaf vortex and reported that this is what is happening on Jupiter), and (4) explanation (in which students ex- plained the cause of the constant storm).


Among these 36 second and third graders, a student’s grade level was not significantly related to the scientific nature of the writing in terms of ideas, vocabulary density, or vocabulary range. This sug- gests that a student’s ability to appropriate scientific discourse in writing may be amenable to social in- fluences. Further, a closer look at the vocabulary used in various artifacts reveals that the range and density of specialized vocabulary in a student’s text were more related to the type of idea a student wrote about than the grade level (see Tables 2 and 3). Both second and third graders who wrote descrip- tions of attributes of Jupiter used more specialized vocabulary than did students who wrote results, and students who wrote an explanation used more spe- cialized vocabulary than did students who wrote a description of attributes. Therefore, there may be a link between a student’s ability to use domain- specific vocabulary and the ability to express par- ticular kinds of scientific ideas.
A Framework for Assessing Students’ Scientific Language Scientific discourse represents a distinct language and, as such, is relevant to students’ academic suc- cess. To understand how students develop fluency in the domain-specific discourses of science, a frame- work is needed for evaluating students’ attempts to comprehend and produce domain-specific lan- guage. It may not be sufficient to evaluate science writing according to widely used characteristics such

Students’ Scientific Language
Once teachers have established a framework for evaluating their students’ attempts at written fluency
in scientific discourse, teachers will gain awareness of their students’ needs and progress in acquisition of this domain-specific language. Then, and most important, teachers can promote this language by providing multiple, multimodal instructional expe- riences. Teachers can provide opportunities for stu- dents to engage in scientific discourse by immersing them in the language of science, modeling the lan- guage, providing authentic purposes that encourage students to take responsibility for their engagement, providing feedback, practice, and opportunities for approximations. In fact, these characteristics of scaf- folded instruction reflect a prominent model of vo- cabulary learning (Nagy & Scott, 2000).
According to this model, knowledge of particu- lar words is incremental, and deepens over multiple exposures to texts, teacher modeling, and classroom discussion. Word knowledge is also multimodal, and involves use of the word in writing, speaking, doing, listening, and reading. Word knowledge is interrelated, so knowledge of a seed coat influences our knowledge of seeds. Word knowledge is het- erogeneous, so knowing the meaning of pollinate

Language Enriched Science Instruction: The Life Cycle of a Seed Plant
The following instructional activities were used by Lisa, a teacher of second graders, in a unit on the life of a seed plant. These activities involve explicit word explanations as well as multimodal use of scientific vocabulary in the expression of scientific ideas such as description of attributes, category comparison, and so forth. In these activities, students had abun- dant multimodal opportunities to engage in both theoretical and data-level language, using domain- specific vocabulary. Importantly, such instruction il- lustrates the intentional focus on the domain-specific nature of academic scientific language found in in- formational books.
Vocabulary Visits. Using vocabulary visits (Blachowicz & Obrochta, 2005), Lisa displayed a large poster that included multiple images of plants. Students brainstormed domain-specific vocabulary unique to the images. In other words, students were encouraged to include words like seed and pollen rather than everyday words like green or big. Lisa wrote the words they suggested on individual sticky notes, and the students chose a logical placement of the sticky note on the chart. As work continued, sticky notes were rearranged and grouped according to semantic links the students made. Throughout the unit, this poster was revisited, added to, and reorga- nized as needed. After the unit, the poster remained on display as an artifact of this domain to which stu- dents added throughout the year.
Read-Aloud of Informational Trade Books and K-W-L. A K-W-L activity (Ogle, 1986)—in which students first record what they know and what they want to know about plants—before Lisa’s read-aloud offered opportunities for students to say, hear, and see scientific language. Lisa modified this activity by grouping the student ideas on the chart according to type (i.e., description of attributes and so forth). As read-aloud progressed, students also added new domain-specific words to the vocabulary visit poster, and Lisa offered explanations of the words. After reading, students shared ideas that they learned from the text to complete the K-W-L activity. These ideas were grouped in the L section of the chart according to type as was done with what the students knew and what they wanted to know.
Hands-On Activities. Multiple hands-on activities with seeds and plants included the following: (a) placing seeds inside plastic baggies with wet paper towels and observing seed coats splitting and root growth, (b) planting seeds inside clear cups so that roots were visible for observation, and (c) planting grass to observe the grass going to seed. During such activities, Lisa encouraged partners to share their ob- servations aloud so that students would use data-lev- el language and specialized vocabulary to describe the growth of their plants.
Journal Writing. Journal entries provided a place for recording data-level language about hands-on ac- tivities as well as theoretical language about ideas from books that Lisa or the students read. Journal writing was always preceded by partner talk and pre- planning for the purpose of providing oral rehearsal of ideas. Journal entries were read to partners for fur- ther engagement with scientific discourse.
Partner Reading of Multiple Trade Books. The availability of multiple informational trade books promoted multiple exposures to technical vocabu- lary and offered choice to students. Selection of such books included consideration of the presence of scientific discourse. Although narrative texts can be included, Lisa chose a wide variety of books (47 titles) that expressed scientific language to support such language acquisition. Lisa provided books’ reading levels as a guide, but did not restrict students’ choices. Early in the unit, pairs of students enjoyed browsing many books, scanning them for interesting information. As the unit progressed, students were encouraged to focus on one or two books per ses- sion. As students read alongside their partners, they stopped to share interesting information. Table 6 il- lustrates the way these instructional activities were organized in a unit.
Conclusion
Fluency in scientific discourse is necessary for success in school science. Success in school sci- ence leads to opportunities for careers in science. Students come to school fluent in many discourses; indeed, some come to school fluent in information- al language. There is, certainly, a robust effort in primary classrooms to build narrative discourse— frameworks exist that highlight beginning, middle,

and end as well as setting, characters, conflict, and resolution (Pappas, 1993).
Informational discourses must be better support- ed in the primary grades, especially since the decon- textualized and theoretical language of science texts becomes increasingly central in mediating scientific knowledge in intermediate and middle school years. Research has shown that informational text is not too difficult nor too off-putting for young students and that they acquire languages in which they are socially supported (Moss, Leone, & Dipillo, 1997; Pappas, 1993; Smolkin & Donovan, 2001). The frame- work provided in this article for viewing students’ science writing essentially offers teachers a language for the assessment and support of students’ scientific language acquisition. Its value lies in the potential for educators to use such a framework to support the full participation of all students in the field of science.

A story impression

Before a reading, the teacher will pick up ten to fifteen vocabulary terms that may be a little challenging, and give the list to the students. The students will then be assigned to write a story containing the words, predicting what might happen with these words in the story they are prepared to read. Students can share these predictions aloud in the class, and often it could end up being very funny and very enjoyable.

Rewrite an ending!

This a very simple, but very possibly enjoyable, writing exercise. Students can pick out a story from any previous class or even in the current class for the writing in which they did not enjoy a particular ending. They could even pick out a film if no literature comes to mind, and they can rewrite the ending. I know as a kid I would always read books or watch movies and dislike the ending. This creates a way for students to not only be creative, but make an ending they find more enjoyable as well.

Students will be assigned a reading the previous night to this class session. When class begins, students will split into large groups. They will then be assigned to write one sentence each in thirty seconds, and then must quickly pass a paper with their sentence to the next person in their group. The activity will end once every person goes once or twice (depending on the size of the text assigned). Students will then read aloud their summaries to the class.

Critiques

A critique is different from a summary, insofar as it analyzes the writing of a previous reading more than merely writing what was discussed in the story. Critiquing also differs in that it points out the strong points and weaknesses in a writing, thus making the critiquer a more objective and active reader. A critique should address the below (borrowed from this wonderful website:


what is the one most important point of the paper?
arguments for why the work is notable or novel or neither,
if the problem the paper tackles is important and or not,
if the proposed solution is potentially useful or not,
are the assumptions clearly specified and are they reasonable and practically valid,
point out additional contexts where the same idea or technology could be applied, relate the work to another paper that you find during your literature search,
have the proposed ideas been evaluated in some form, how, and how thorough is that evaluation,
identify a list of possible future research tasks to make the proposed work even better, develop a different solution strategy, or to drop some of the given assumptions, and so on.

Crawford slip writing

With a large group such as a classroom, there are always going to be many ideas present. As a result, the Crawford slip writing strategy can come in handy. Any number of prompts can be acceptable for this type of strategy. Some might be: how to be a successful high school student, what to expect in college, or in what ways might we improve school allocated funding.

Each person is given a stack or note-pad of at least 25 small slips of paper (e.g. A6 paper). The pads are often pre-prepared to consist of idea-jogging graphics, or in the case of larger groups, the time and activity of handling the pads in Step 5 becomes crucial, so the pad needs to be designed so that the ideas can be separated and sorted easily.
At appropriate points in the general proceedings, problem statements are read out to the group using any of the well established procedures such as: ‘How to…’ or ‘In what ways might we…’. The search is generally for ideas for solutions, however in some instances you may want to get ideas for alternative problem statements, or related issues, etc.
Participants are told to write ideas of the required kind one per sheet, in any order. Displayed images or words to the whole meeting to act as triggers, or organising participants to work in twos or threes (e.g. with others sitting near them), can help with stimulating ideas.
When writing has begun to slow down (usually 5 – 10 minutes) the note-pads are collected.
If rapid feedback is being attempted, the booklets are immediately divided up between the members of a team of helpers and sorted in agreed ways – e.g. by frequency of occurrence and/or feasibility. If a greater degree of sophisticated categorisation is required, then the categories will probably have to be pre-determined (e.g. from an earlier pilot), so that each team member can work to the same categories. In the case of a very large meeting, presenting early feedback as examples drawn from a limited random sample of booklets may be the best option. Feedback during the same meeting is difficult to achieve. However, for an event lasting several days (such as a conference) quite complex feedback throughout the duration of the conference is plausible if the logistics are well planned. Rapid feedback from a large exercise can be quite a coup de theatre if organised successfully.
After the early feedback, analysis and evaluation can continue at a steadier pace to identify the most useful ideas and develop them into practicable proposals.
Finally, a feedback report dispatched to participants is often valuable.

Comic strip

(related to Heather Petrella's mini lesson)

Students will be paired in groups and each group will receive a different comic strip with blank bubbles. Students will have to come up with their own words to put into the bubbles based on the content provided to them (essentially, the images in the comics). Not only can this be a fun activity, but it also forces students to relate images to words, and to carefully construct a meaningful story in a short amount of space and time.

Quickwrite

Students will be given a graphic organizer with just bubbles. All students will begin reading a different, very short story in class, and then must write everything they learned in one minute on the graphic organizer. Students can switch short stories a few times until they perform three or four of these writings. The objective is to keep students focused on the reading, and to get their thoughts as quickly as possible down onto paper.

Bi-monthly class newsletter

In order to get information to students' parents, they can become part of the process. Each student can be given a specific task to write something as part of a class newsletter pertaining to what is going on in the class lately, what to look forward to and prepare for in the future, and notations on what they feel they have learning and enjoying the most. The newsletter can also contain short stories and letters to the editor as well.

"BIG" words

Students will be given advanced vocabulary specific to their reading/writing levels and also will be given sentences utilizing these words in a context they can begin to understand them. Without looking them up, students will be instructed to create sentences of their own containing the words, and at the end of the lesson will be given the true definition of the word to compare with what they felt the word meant in the context provided.

Beginning/Ending of School Year

Students can write a letter to themselves at the beginning of the schoolyear as to their expectations of the course, a little bit about themselves and what they are doing or enjoying at the moment, and any more information about the present and future they may find appropriate. At the end of the schoolyear, the students can open their letters and read them, and then as a final assignment, write a letter to next year's class about what they enjoyed in the course and how much they changed as a result of the course.

Finding a Fib

Students will be paired into groups and instructed to write several statements, some of which are false about a previous reading and some of which are true. They will then challenge another group as to what of their statements are true and false. Students can complete an exit slip at the end of the strategy detailing the successes and failures of the assignment, and can also write in their daily journals about the ambiguity of statements and how some statements can be viewed as both true and false, depending on context.

DEFENDS

A strategy created by Edwin S. Ellis, DEFENDS is a task-specific writing strategy used in conjunction with an organizer to cue students through the writing process. This strategy is effective with students who have mild and moderate disabilities. As with all mnemonicis, teachers need to model the strategy to students and go through the steps of the mnemonic repeatedly until the students can use it independently.

Using COPS

COPS is an editing procedure for students that helps them to remember what they need to look for when editing:

C is for Capitalization.
O is for Organization
P is for punctuation
S is for spelling

Although editing is not limited to these, remembering this acronym is beneficial to beginning any editing process, and is an easy reminder as to what needs to be looked at twice or thrice over.

Cloze procedure

Cloze procedure is where a teacher takes a text, erases some words, and essentially has students fill in the blanks. It is sort of like a mad lib, but a bit more mature and helpful to reading and writing strategies. It also helps students to utilize a wide range of their vernacular.

To prepare materials for Cloze exercises, any of the following techniques may be used:

Select a self-contained passage of a length appropriate for the grade level of the students being assessed. Use materials easily read by the students.
Leave the first and last sentences and all punctuation intact.
Carefully select the words for omission using a word-count formula, such as every fifth word or other criteria. To assess students' knowledge of the topic or their abilities to use semantic cues, delete content words which carry meaning, such as nouns, main verbs, adjectives and adverbs. To assess students' use of syntactic cues, delete some conjunctions, prepositions and auxiliary words.
When preparing the final draft of the passage, make all blanks of equal length to avoid including visual clues about the lengths of omitted words.
Have the students read the entire passage before they fill in the blanks.
Encourage the students to fill each blank if possible.
Although there should be no time limit for this exercise, the time necessary for completion should be noted.
Suggest that students reread the completed passage.

Cause and Effect

Using this cause and effect graphic organizer, students can choose from a number of topics the teacher provides in order to plan for a prewrite for a cause and effect paper. Cause and effect papers require much analyzation, description, and higher level orders of thinking, all things that are beneficial to a student's writing ability. This graphic organizer works particularly well because it can be expanded upon and has room for notations and sidebars whenever applicable.

Buddy system

In a secondary setting, a teacher could set up some students with a younger student in the school or an outside school (legality permitting) to tutor them on reading and writing. Students can write reflections on this buddy program (something they will encounter much throughout college if they choose to attend) and can also teach themselves along with teaching a younger partner. These types of papers are very beneficial to get started on at a younger age because it puts them at an advantage over students who never are afforded this opportunity.

Starting an afterschool book club

Teachers starting extracurricular book clubs can really get students interested in more literature which is never a bad thing. Students who join the book club can get rewarded for extra credit for reviews they do of the books. Furthermore, students can be a part of the procedure for choosing a book for the club to use. Although the purpose of the book club is to socialize, it can also be a great way of getting students more interested in different types of literature and writing styles, which they can practice and utilize in a real classroom setting, which is a great benefit that other students may not receive. Obviously, the teacher needs to be careful to not give too much extra help to these students because some students may simply not be able to attend for various other reasons, but incentives are a good thing nonetheless.

Oh...the blog

Well, blogs like this can certainly be utilized as a writing strategy. Furthermore, blogs for some students can be helpful if they are sick, out of country, or for some other reason disposed, but still able to turn in work. There are many benefits to blogs:


In addition to providing teachers with an excellent tool for communicating with students, there are numerous educational benefits of blogs. Blogs are:
Highly motivating to students, especially those who otherwise might not become participants in classrooms.
Excellent opportunities for students to read and write.
Effective forums for collaboration and discussion.
Powerful tools to enable scaffolded learning or mentoring to occur.
Using the Blog in the Classroom
As an educational tool, blogs may be integrated in a multi-faceted manner to accommodate all learners. Blogs can serve at least four basic functions.
Classroom Management
Class blogs can serve as a portal to foster a community of learners. As they are easy to create and update efficiently, they can be used to inform students of class requirements, post handouts, notices, and homework assignments, or act as a question and answer board.

Collaboration
Blogs provide a space where teachers and students can work to further develop writing or other skills with the advantage of an instant audience. Teachers can offer instructional tips, and students can practice and benefit from peer review. They also make online mentoring possible. For example, a class of older students can help a class of younger students develop more confidence in their writing skills. Students can also participate in cooperative learning activities that require them to relay research findings, ideas, or suggestions.

Discussions
A class blog opens the opportunity for students to discuss topics outside of the classroom. With a blog, every person has an equal opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions. Students have time to be reactive to one another and reflective. Teachers can also bring together a group of knowledgeable individuals for a given unit of study for students to network and conference with on a blog.

Student Portfolios
Blogs present, organize, and protect student work as digital portfolios. As older entries are archived, developing skills and progress may be analyzed more conveniently. Additionally, as students realize their efforts will be published, they are typically more motivated to produce better writing. Teachers and peers may conference with a student individually on a developing work, and expert or peer mentoring advice can be easily kept for future reference.

Beachball Ice Breaker

Using your senses

(Taken partially from a mini lesson in class)

Students will be read a story of a boy going to a baseball game and the experiences he has while at the game and what he feels and the emotions he goes through.

Students will then be instructed to write a few paragraphs describing one singular object or event, and must do so by utilizing all senses as concisely as possible.

Hollywood + old short story

Later in a language arts semester, students will be instructed to bring in an old short story of theirs. They will then rewrite the short story as a script from a Hollywood or independent film perspective. Typical elements for these types of films will be provided, along with the seven typical plots that most films follow and utilize.

Bringing in an old book

Students will be instructed to bring in an old book from their homes that they may not need very much (teacher can bring in extras for students who may not have this). Students will then, with a highlighter, highlight random sentences from a few pages throughout the entire book, (and must remember where they highlighted). After this, students will construct a story utilizing the sentences they found in the book and sentences of their own as connectors.

Ohio State University cubing

Students will utilize the "cubing" strategy to think about the paper topic from different perspectives, which should help generate some new ideas about the topic.

Students will be instructed to imagine the six sides of a cube as each being one way of looking at their topic (no more than 3 minutes each). They will then write down their responses to these six sets of questions/prompts in order. It might help to number their responses so they can keep track of them as they go:
1. Describe: Think about your topic in terms of the five senses. What does it look like? What color is it? What does it smell, taste, sound, or feel like?
2. Compare: What is your topic similar to? What is its exact opposite?
3. Associate: What does your topic remind you of? When you close your eyes and think about your topic, what pops into your head?
4. Analyze: Think about the parts of your topic and how they work together. Tell what causes your topic, how it emerges/emerged, what causes or influences it, and how it can be categorized or grouped.
5. Apply: What can you do with your topic? How can your subject be used productively? What good does your subject do anyone?
6. Argue: Take a stand for or against your subject - or both! Think of as many reasons, logical or silly, that you might have for favoring or opposing your subject.
Don't pause between each set of questions -- just keep writing until you have responded to all six sides of the cube.

Alphabetic biography

Students will write a biography on themselves that will incorporate all letters of the alphabet.
For example:

A: Lived in Akron, Ohio for two years.
B: Bicycle enthusiast
C: Drove my first Car at the age of fifteen.

etc.

Then students will switch with a partner, or in a group, as an icebreaker to get to know one another and increase sociability for future group projects.

Dr Duggan's exit slip

An exit slip can help jog students memories from what they learned in class previously by writing this information down before they leave the class, and can help them digest the information just learned a little more easily. Students will answer these questions/statements for an exit slip:
Write about what you remember from the day's lesson and what you think should be continued and touched more upon in the following lesson.
What was hard to understand or comprehend?
What was most enjoyable?
What new information did you gain from the day's lesson?

History books

Students will be asked to bring their history books in (if they have one) or share with a neighbor. Students will randomly turn to a page in their history book, find a name they are familiar with, and write a story pretending to be that person for a day. What did they do in the morning? Did anything interesting happen to them that day, politically or just with their family? Students should be creative, and really can make this an interesting and fun activity. Extra points for historically accurate information.

Alliteration

Students will be instructed to create an alliterative poem for an entire page. Every line must begin with the same letter, and they can even just create a one word line for each line of the poem. It will be stressed to not utilize articles (the, a, an) because that nullifies the creativity possible with an exercise such as this.

Found magazine

Students will be given a copy of a few pages from 'Found' magazine which compiles lists or notes that readers send in that were found randomly throughout their days. Students will find an anonymous list or note they like and write a story pretending to be the person who constructed the list or note, and what they may have wanted to pursue with the list or note, or what they may have been thinking at the time of the writing of the note or list.

Picture of someone

Teacher will instruct students to bring in a picture of someone they find online through an images search and then will place the pictures into a pile upon entering class. Students will then be instructed to go choose a picture from the pile that they did not bring in and will write a stream of consciousness story connecting the person in the photograph's thoughts, or if they were the person in the picture what they may have been thinking at the time.

Holiday Picture

Teacher will bring in a picture of a holiday or holiday celebration, and pass a picture out to groups of four students. Groups will be divided according to grammar: verb, noun, adverb, and adjective. Students will be instructed to come up with four words (from whatever group they are in, i.e. four nouns for the noun group) and then will switch groups and bring their group's four words to their next group. The second, and final, groups will consist of a person from each of the four groups, with a total of sixteen words. Students will then be instructed to write a sentence using each of the words until they can no longer fit any more words in, or until they use up all the words. Students with the longest sentence win!

Dr. Duggan's one page sentence

Students will be given a prompt, if they desire, and then must write a one-page long sentence. They will have twenty minutes to do so, and throughout the twenty minutes, the teacher can put hints on the board as to how to construct a sentence of this length (such as semi colons, using 'and' or commas, etc). At the end, the teacher can show some examples of this in literature to show that it is not as far-fetched as it may have seemed before the lesson (see Henry James).

Describe a color

Students will pick their favorite color. They can do a google images search of the color if they would like, and then will be instructed to describe that color to someone who may be colorblind, or someone from another planet who does not have that color on their planet. Students can get really into detail, and although it may seem impossible to describe a color, they can learn new ways of saying something without really saying what it is.

Stitching together.

Students, in their daily writing journals, will be instructed to write a small piece over the course of the week each day, not correlating with one another. In the following week, students will construct a formative assessment by combining all of the writings from the previous week, and stitch them together, trying to make them cohesive. This could end up being very funny, serious, or even a bit wacky.

Classical music

Teacher will play a classical track for the class on audiotape or via a computer connection. Students will be instructed to close their eyes and focus on the song, and its melodies. Teacher can choose Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, or even a more contemporary instrumental like Coldplay's Life in Technicolor. Students will then be instructed to write a poem/sonnet/limerick on what they felt during the song or what they think the writer of the song intended for the listener's to feel.

Word Scramble

Students will either utilize an online word scramble, or an in-class board game, such as Scrabble, to create a word scramble. Students can play out a game with one another, and then, with the words they utilized in the game, create a short story with the words they used. There will be extra credit points awarded for words that utilize higher level orders of thinking (or words that score high in Scrabble).

Tiered Persuasive Essay Activity

For a junior high classroom, students from beginning, intermediate and advanced English language learning can follow this instructional activity, respectively:

Beginning - Students will receive a model of a five-sentence paragraph and explicit instruction in constructing the paragraph. As a prewriting activity, students will list their topic and develop a list of at least three things that support their topic.

Intermediate - Students will receive a model of a persuasive essay and a graphic organizer that explains the construction of a persuasive essay. They will also receive explicit instruction in writing a persuasive essay. As a prewriting activity, students will use the graphic organizer to plan their writing.

Advanced - Students will review the graphic organizer for a persuasive essay. Students will be given explicit instruction in locating sources and quotes for their essays, As a prewriting activity, students will use the graphic organizer to organize their essay, and they will also compile a list of five sources that define their main point.

Translate this!

Students can surf to books.google.com, find a text they like, and pore through it for a quote they enjoy or find interesting. Once they do this, they can copy/paste the quote into translate.google.com, running it through several different language to language conversions. From this, they can then translate that back into English. Whatever the results may be, and often different from the original quote they are, a student can wrote a poem or short story focused on the remaining translated quote. Or even write a story on how they think the quote went from its original meaning to the new one!

Mnemonic devices

Students will explore a type of writing, creative writing, expository essays, persuasive essays, etc. From this they can find out the structure that a particular type of writing may follow, and from this structure come up with their own mnemonic device for remembering that structure. This could be beneficial when encountering a test, standardized or not, that requires them to write a paper utilizing a specific type of essay.

For example: Expository essays follow this format roughly:
Capture interest
Introduct topic
Make a claim/thesis
Body
Conclusion

A mnemonic device for this: Can I Make Butter Cookies?

Students could come up with as many as they want, but as few as three or four.

Walking through a store

Students will walk through a pharmacy or general convenient store, pick out a few items they have never tried, and try to make up a recipe and write an explanation as to how they would like to use the ingredients they came across. This could be funny, serious, or a little bit of both!

Speeches

Students: Find a copy of a speech given, either online or in a piece of literature. Search through the speech, find a line they find potentially ambiguous. Utilize this line in a what the speaker did not intend and spin it into a speech of their own.

Google Image Search

First, students should ensure a filter is on for an image search. Next, they can use a search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo) and type in a few adjectives. Click search, and when they come upon an image they like, they can write a story about it.

Newspaper headlines

Students can pore through a newspaper or magazine, find a headline they like, and then write a fictional story or article on it. They can also take this further and find an article or op-ed and take the first sentence and write a paper or article on that. This can get students interested in the field of journalism as it pertains to fictional writing as well.

Mythological creatures

Students can research, in library or the internet, a mythological creature or god. They can then learn about one they enjoy, and then read a story about that creature or god. The students then can write a creative story on their own featuring that creature or god in an entirely different atmosphere/context from whence it was originally utilized. This can really get students to think constructively out of the box, while still keeping true to the authenticity of the character.

Replacing quotes for context

Something I thought of when constructing my course design paper was taking a famous quote or quote from a movie, and then having students utilize the quote in a completely different context to construct a story. This could be assessed as a formal assignment for a creative writing classroom and kids really seem to enjoy quotes and may like to utilize them in a different capacity altogether. This could be a funny, and fun, activity for all students.

Write to Inform

Writing to inform, or essentially a how-to paper, is often part of a unit in a language arts class. A strategy to complete these informational essay is as follows:
Brainstorming. Students can get in think-pair-share groups and brainstorm topics for an essay of this nature.
Categorizing - Students can then split into groups based generally on what their informative paper will follow.
Experience charts will help the students construct the body of their essay in this manner.
Researching will continue the process of learning more about your paper before starting it.
Webbing can be the final pre-write step before actually developing an introduction and thesis.

Interest Groups/Interest Centers

With interest groups, the teacher can divide up groups heterogenously so all students can increase their sociability and familiarize themselves with things outside of their comfort zone. In these groups, the teacher may provide a small, short text focused on a specific content area. The text could, and likely should, include photographs, as this helps appeal to visual learners, and each group will then write a paragraph or so (for each student) on the text and then present this to the class. The teacher can and should ensure that the students be as creative as possible when structuring their paragraphs. This could be a week long lesson, and the students can rotate groups each day. Sociability and networking are important things, and involving writing in this can benefit them greatly, and help them enjoy the experience more than they normally would with a group that may have a dominating member who just completes all the writing himself.

Critique or critical analysis...

For more advanced secondary learners, an educator can give students a topic, article, or any other form of text, and ask them to write a literary analysis on this. It is comparable to a book review, but evokes a more in depth process then simply summarizing a text. Analyzing it thoroughly, and choosing a thesis, but given an open topic from which to develop a thesis, is vital. The student should not create a thesis beforehand, however, as it is better to develop a thesis as one writes. A critique truly is a technique in which learners analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a text or subject and then makes thoughtful suggestions to improve it or to strengthen it.

Corners

Here is a basic strategy entitled Corners:

Pose a question that has multiple answers.

Move students to a corner of the classroom that has been designated as a meeting place of like opinions.

Students should discuss why they believe the way they do.

Selected students will write down collective answers and report them to the teacher.

Some sample topics:

Which character in a book would you like to meet the most?

Name four historical figures who you believe have changed the world, and why?


This strategy will gets kids to think in an interactive way, and then to write their answers down in a thoughtful and helpful manner.

Laura Candler

An educator by the name of Laura Candler developed a website, lauracandler.com, that has a myriad of instructional strategies online for educators and students alike. She has six literacy strategies with a lot of material on how to utilize these in the classroom and at home. They are: Balanced Literacy, Literary Circles, Reading Workshop, Book Buddies, Literary Lunch Brunch, and Spelling & Vocabulary.

Over the years, I have read many wonderful resources to help me get started with Literature Circles, and I would like to share my four favorite books with you. The material on my website is helpful, but if you are serious about implementing Literature Circles, I would suggest purchasing at least one of the books below. To help you decide which books might best meet your needs, I've written a short recommendation for each. Enjoy!

Buzz groups

Buzz groups are an instructional strategy in which students discuss a topic or issue in small groups. It helps students practice effective communication skills. The educator places students into groups, gives the topic, and specific instructions on how to address the topic. The educator may give the students suggestions, and then they may write some short paragraphs on whatever topic it is. This could be really great for interweaving current events into the curriculum as well.

Journal Writing...or Blogging!

Giving students an opportunity to write their own thoughts, private to themselves or public to the whole world, can only increase brain activity and help the students. Much like we are currently doing my Secondary Education - Teaching Writing in Junior/Senior High School, any writing activity is beneficial to a student. There are many opportunities for a student to write, and many resources for a place to write. A student could simply keep a journal or diary, they may write stories, they can start a blog, they can keep a composition notebook. The possibilites are seemingly endless. There are also many free sites online (like blogspot!) that can be private OR public, depending on the writer's choice. Modeling

"Modeling has been shown to be a vital part of helping students learn the process of constructing meaning and of helping them learn the various strategies and skills involved in this process (Bandura, 1986). Modeling takes place first through the literature itself (Walmsley & Walp, 1990) and the way it is organized in thematic units. Modeling of specific strategies and skills is also provided by the teacher for those students who need it. This is done by using literature that has been read as models to show the use of strategies and skills (Walmsley & Walp, 1990). These lessons are known as mini-lessons and they may be formal or informal (Cooper, 1993). Modeling by the teacher is also done through reading aloud (Anderson, Hiebert, Scott, & Wilkinson, 1985), through demonstrating response activities and discussions (Martinez & Roser, 1991), and through shared writing (Cooper, 1993). Students also provide modeling for each other through cooperative learning."

Modes of Reading

Modes of reading is defined as the different ways in which literature may be read. It could be read aloud by student, teacher, both student and teacher, in groups, cooperatively, or independently. By utilizing all of these modes in the classroom, an educator can see what fits each students' needs best. We then are able to scaffold instruction and thus can support each student at their respective level, and this in turn will hopefully lead to success when reading a text or literature.

Schema Theory and Prior Knowledge

Activating prior knowledge is something that is necessary in any classroom to build upon the foundations of what your students already know. "Schema theory was developed by R. C. Anderson, a respected educational psychologist . This learning theory views organized knowledge as an elaborate network of abstract mental structures which represent one's understanding of the world."

Context

Understanding some principles from schema theory can help in your work. Here are some principles to apply:


It is important to teach general knowledge and generic concepts. A large proportion of learner difficulties can be traced to insufficient general knowledge, especially in cross-cultural situations.
Teachers must help learners build schemata and make connections between ideas. Discussion, songs, role play, illustrations, visual aids, and explanations of how a piece of knowledge applies are some of the techniques used to strengthen connections.
Since prior knowledge is essential for the comprehension of new information, teachers either need to

help students build the prerequisite knowledge, or
remind them of what they already know before introducing new material.
Schemata grow and change as new information is acquired.
Learners feel internal conflict if they are trying to assimilate schemata which contradict their previous suppositions. Teachers need to understand and be sympathetic to this tension.
Deep-seated schemata are hard to change. An individual will often prefer to live with inconsistencies rather than to change a deeply-held value or belief.
Discussion

Research by schema theorists indicates that abstract concepts are best understood after a foundation of concrete, relevant information has been established (Schallert 1982:26). The general knowledge provides a framework into which the newly-formed structure can be fitted.



Here are some characteristics of schemata according to Anderson (1977:418--419):


Schemata are always organized meaningfully, can be added to, and, as an individual gains experience, develop to include more variables and more specificity.
Each schema is embedded in other schemata and itself contains subschema.
Schemata change moment by moment as information is received.
They may also be reorganized when incoming data reveals a need to restructure the concept.
The mental representations used during perception and comprehension, and which evolve as a result of these processes, combine to form a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts.

Independent Reading

It seems that today's youth and young adults put literature on the backburner, not recognizing its fundamental values in its inherent ability to stimulate creativity and thought. While searching for strategies, I came across a very good quote I thought would work well in a modern classroom. "Children and young adults learn to read and write by having meaningful, authentic reading and writing experiences and by getting support from more experienced individuals. In order for students to become expert readers and writers, they must have time to practice and apply what they are learning - reading and writing. Therefore, it is essential that the literacy-centered classroom provide time for students to read independently in self-selected books and to engage in self-initiated writing." Essentially, we must allow students to read what they want, in addition to assigned texts. If children are allowed to explore options not always available to them, this can do nothing but help. A child will be infinitely more inclined to read a text of their choice than one of arbitrary choice by an educator or parent.

Writing Instructional Strategies...Take One

The first strategy I will introduce is kind of a simple one. To become a successful writer in any facet, we must all learn to read correctly. Not everyone reads at the same pace. There are many internet resources out there, but one that I discovered in my Educational Foundations 307 class is http://kaganonline.com/. This website utilizes cooperative learning structures such as Showdown, Rallytable, Pairs Checks, and Numbered Heads Together to review skills relative to writing and reading. There are many free articles available, and a lot of them are on research and rationale. They utilize Kagan Structures, which "are scientifically research based as well as backed by classroom evidence from districts, schools, and teachers experiencing success with Kagan."
